TELEVISUAL’S FACTUAL OFFER
At Televisual, we are passionate about factual television and the factual community is a central pillar of our audience.
In previous years we have run our Televisual Factual Festival in late November from 2005 until 2019, and took a pragmatic decision to postpone in 2020 and this year. We have every intention of staging the festival again in 2022, with a focussed two days and over 50 speakers: the major broadcasters and streamers outlining their commissioning framework and wish lists and the UK’s leading filmmakers deconstructing the latest trends. And when we do, we hope to see you there.
This year, the Televisual Factual Briefing will be joined by our series of Televisual Factual Films with leading UK commissioners which will be individually posted on the Televisual website over the coming six weeks.
TELEVISUAL FACTUAL FILMS
We have produced a series of films with factual commissioners from the BBC, Channel 4, Sky, A+E Networks UK and Discovery as well as a vox pops shot at the Grierson Awards with many of the community’s leading lights and with more films to follow. We wanted to avoid yet more long-winded Zoom recordings and instead have shot the films two-camera with a professional crew, edited the films as if for broadcast and added clips to make them concise, informative and very watchable. The films are all being posted on
televisual.com. They are all open access and don’t require payment or even registration.
Through watching and hearing our interviews, you will find out the strengths of factual on the platforms, what the factual commissioners are looking for, what funding they have, how to access it and how to approach them. Listening to our interviewees, their passion and openness is evident. They are as reliant on producers for fresh ideas, innovative pitches and new stories as producers are on them for their funding. Over the years there has been cynicism about commissioners not really wanting risk taking or bold ideas. But if you have good ideas, fit for their platforms and well presented, they definitely want to hear from you, including those bold and risk-taking projects.

Reaching a broad audience that includes the next generation is a basic and wanting ideas that chime with younger people is a common thread in our commissioner interviews. Another thread is wanting filmmakers to understand their channel dynamics and audience demographics, rather than touting the same proposal from one channel to the next. If a producer doesn’t take an active interest in the platform, why should the commissioner take an active interest in the pitch?
If this magazine and our films in some way help get an important documentary off the ground or a new feel-good format into production, then our energies will have been well spent. We hope you have found value in this magazine and will find value in our films.
