FORWARD WITH PARAMOUNT +

Channel 5 is now open for Paramount + business. The UK is one of the only territories to have a factual budget for the ViacomCBS-owned streamer, which adds nicely to the possibilities for UK producers pitching to the channel. Channel 5 Factual and current affairs commissioning editor Daniel Pearl will be heading up UK originated unscripted for Paramount +. It is looking to commission right across the traditional SVOD factual arena, which will be anthologies, premium factual, box sets and feature documentaries. Stories need to resonant for a UK audience (not necessarily set in Britain), and they need to be broad. They won’t have quite the large budgets that Netflix is famous for, but they will fund for scale.

WHAT’S NEXT AT CHANNEL 5

There’s a foundation of popular travelogues on C5, including new show Robson Green: Coastal Fishing, from Firecracker Films. Coming up, Jane McDonald is visiting home and abroad, with four-parter Jane McDonald’s Caribbean, alongside six-parter Jane McDonald’s Yorkshire, both made by VIS UK, ViacomCBS’s in-house production arm.

Holidaying has paid dividends for Channel 5. Observational docuseries Bargain Loving Brits in the Sun from Red Sauce has been recommissioned. While the original series charts the lives of Brits who have swapped the UK for life in Spain, it’s extending the franchise with six-parter Bargain Loving Brits by the Sea and a bumper 40-part order of Bargain Loving Brits in the Sun – Costa Living.

Susan Calman is also returning after the success of her Grand Days Out series, with a second series, plus Big Seaside Holiday, both from IWC.
