has recently signed up to the Creative Diversity Network and the set of targets that this entails. As well as addressing sustainability in production, environmental issues have clearly impacted editorial, with two motoring franchises – Fifth Gear and Vintage Voltage – becoming electric vehicle shows.

UK content is the bedrock of the linear channels, but whether it’s local, or global, it’s all about finding stories and characters that resonate. With audiences increasingly less parochial, it’s more important to find stories with universal appeal, telling universal truths. One example of this on Discovery+ was break-out Nordic, sub-titled documentary series Estonia about the cruise ferry that sank in the Baltic sea in 1994.

Discovery has long been a global service and standard terms of trade remain full buyout, retaining the IP. However, not all commissions are global, so it is open to co-productions and various financing models, if the idea works and it wants it on the slate.

WHAT’S NEXT AT DISCOVERY

Really has eight-parter Charlotte Church’s Dream Build coming up from Koska, where the singing star brings the cameras into her own renovation project, doing up Welsh designer Laura Ashley’s former home, a mansion in the Elan Valley. The series will also play on Discovery+. While Ricochet is behind Kings of the Wood, a new show for Quest that taps into the audience interest in craftsmanship.

With commissioning now in full swing for one-year old streaming service Discovery+, there has been a focus on noisy, premium programming, to bring in an audience and drive subscriptions. These include Mentorn Media’s five-parter Children of the Cult and four-parter from Dragonfly, Anni: The Moneymoon Murder Recently announced is two-parter Johnny vs Amber about the troubled marriage of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, from Optomen. It’s no longer interested in premium sport docs.
