APPLE TV+
Natural history has gone down well on the two-year old Apple TV+ service. In 2021, the streamer debuted season two of Tiny World, narrated by Paul Rudd, from Bristol- based Pimsoll and a second series of Earth at Night in Colour from nearby Offspring Films. One of its first major factual commissions was Becoming You, from Wall to Wall, a natural history approach to the first year of life. It also featured The Year Earth Changed, narrated by David Attenborough, from BBC Studios.
In other factual genres, Apple TV+ has ordered The Reluctant Traveler, a travelogue with Schitt’s Creek star Eugene Levy, to be produced by ITV Studios’ Twofour. Apple TV+’s unscripted and non-fiction roster also includes 9/11: Inside the President’s War Room, a co-production with the BBC, directed by Adam Wishart.
HBO MAX
WarnerMedia’s HBO Max streamer is upping its factual content and broadening its unscripted offering. Although it’s not yet launching in the UK, it is rolling out in other European territories. The goal is to make 12 unscripted shows in a given year from across the European stable. Those could be competition formats, reality TV, or documentary series that are ‘pop-ier’ than the company has traditionally made. Unscripted wins for HBO Max so far include dating format FBoy Island and Selena + Chef. In Europe, it recently commissioned father-daughter exploration of Czech culture, eight-parter Czech It Out!
The latest arrival in the UK is NBCU’s Peacock. With access to NBCU programming, unscripted shows in the mix are mainly reality, include Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Million Dollar Listing, Southern Charm, Below Deck, The Real Housewives and Top Chef. It’s not rushing to commission in Europe, but it is expanding its unscripted family content, having announced two new US-based lifestyle show originals earlier this year, Create the Escape and Backyard Blowout.
