drug which promises to help children born with Achondroplasia.
STAND-OUT SINGLES
Single films can command big audiences and build those audiences over time on iPlayer. In documentary, Catching a Predator, directed by Liz Williams, dealt with male rape through using strong personal testimony and exploring the trial of a serial rapist. Meanwhile, Hunting the Essex Lorry Killers, directed by Niamh Kennedy, had access to the investigation of 39 migrants
discovered in a lorry in 2019. Both films had around one million requests on iPlayer in their first month. Commissioned by factual entertainment, Roman Kemp: Our Silent Emergency is another good example.
In science and natural history, the commissioning team have been looking out for narrative-driven, even cinematic titles. Upcoming is Operation Satanic: The Sinking of the Rainbow Warrior (w/t), a feature length doc from Oxford Scientific Films. Given the urgency around climate change, there’s real hunger
for stories that reveal issues and scandal, such as the increased threat to the Brazilian rainforest that underpins three-parter The Bolsanaros.
In history, a stand-out single film in 2021 was BBC/ Apple TV+ co-production 9/11: Inside the President’s War Room, that used eye witness accounts to bring contemporary history to life. There’s also interest in revisionist history, with a new eye on past events. Plimsoll has recently been commissioned to make two-parter Thatcher And Reagan – The Special
Relationship (w/t), where Thatcher biographer Charles Moore will explore their close friendship.
The BBC has committed to doubling investment in arts and music on BBC Two over 2021 and 22, with up to eight major arts and music box-set series for BBC iPlayer each year. Recent commissions include three-parter from Rogan Films Frida & Diego, which was announced alongside four-part series Black Art Matters, from Milk & Honey, a commission paid for out of the ring-fenced £1m BBC Small Indie Fund.
WHAT’S NEXT AT THE BBC
BBC Two and BBC Wales have commissioned six-parter Reunion Hotel from Caernarfon-based Darlun. Fronted by Alex Jones, Reunion Hotel open its doors to those longing for a life- affirming reunion - from giving thanks to life saving heroes, romantic reunions and emotional homecomings, to the ex-pupil reunited with the teacher who changed his life. Louis Theroux will be back, with BBC
Two three-part series Louis Theroux: Forbidden America (w/t), from his indie Mindhouse Productions, where he meets content creators and explores the impact of the internet and social media on some of the most controversial corners of American entertainment. Attenborough and the Mammoth
Graveyard (w/t), a special from Argonon’s Windfall Films, is one in a line up of new natural history programming for BBC One, BBC Two and iPlayer, with shows from the BBC NHU and Oxford Scientific. Britain’s Top Takeaways is an eight- parter from Ricochet, for BBC Two and iPlayer, anchored by Sara Cox and Darren Harriott. Each week tests five takeaways from the same foodie sector, across the UK. Each order is biked to households in and around Manchester for customer critique, before the scores are revealed.
