THE TELEVISUAL FILM PROJECT SUPER-FAST & ROBUST MOBILE DRIVES

On-Set: Tom Mitchell Technical Director, Mission The object of the exercise was to trial some new production kit and for this we had Tom Michell, Technical Director of film and drama DIT specialists, Mission. There are few more technically knowledgeable or able than Mitchell. Mitchell also brought Alex Golding with him; a highly experienced DIT manning a second station. Mitchell and Golding’s contribution was invaluable.

On the new Sony PVM-X monitors: “It’s always been our goal at Mission to ensure that we’re linking up all the processes from pre-production to production and post. Having the new Sony PVM-X monitors means that you can start with your LUT in pre-production on the Sony BVM-HX310 and you can have the same LUT and look on production and you’ll have the same consistent image back in post. The colour rendition is very close to being identical between the PVM-X and the BVM-HX310. It’s absolutely imperative that the images are consistent between on-set and post. It allows us to grade HDR on- set in a truly cost-effective way. “Up until now the monitors

have been too big, too bulky and too expensive. These new monitors enable us to more realistically bring HDR into the production process. Just like the HX-310 it has a peak 1000 nit luminance across the whole screen. With the Humvee headlights full blown, the monitor has been able to show that in full glory without local dimming.”

“ IT’S ABSOLUTELY IMPERATIVE THAT THE IMAGES ARE CONSISTENT BETWEEN ON-SET AND POST”

On the new Symply Workspace on-set storage:: “I love the fact that the Symply Workspace is small, compact and incredibly portable. It took me 15 minutes to set-up from opening the box and fits snugly on my cart. For The Fox Hunt, we worked on Full Frame Sony X-OCN XT 6K files, which are relatively large, and we were able to download them incredibly quickly through Thunderbolt 3. The Workspace comes with between 32 and 136 terabytes of useable storage and connects to up to four clients (and eight with a JBOD) for high-bandwidth work and works on both Macs and Windows. Symply have integrated their axle product which is a media asset management system which allows you to create a watch folder, drop assets into it and have them automatically transcoded on the work station. It allows me to chew through very large files incredibly quickly and connect multiple people up and gives me the flexibility I want both on-set and in the lab.”

On G-Technology’s mobile storage family: “On-set, you really want a product that you can absolutely trust, and G-Technology has always been that brand for me.
