AFTER LIFE 2

The second season of Ricky Gervais’ sitcom After Life made its debut on Netflix in April this year. The hit show, again written, directed and exec produced by Gervais, sees small town journalist Tony (played by Gervais) continue to struggle with grief after the death of his wife from cancer.

For the second series, the conform, grade, QC and final delivery to Netflix was again handled between Pinewood-based post houses Outpost Facilities and Narduzzo Too. “When we collaborate on projects, for all intents and purposes, we’re one set up,” says Colourist Vince Narduzzo of Narduzzo Too. “And we are literally next door so that collaboration works seamlessly,” agrees Outpost MD, Nigel Gourley. Gervais’ brief for season two was, very simply,

to keep the look and feel in its entirety from the first series as, “he was absolutely thrilled with

it,” says Narduzzo. So the only changes went on behind the scenes with season two shot AVC- Intra 444 instead of 422, again on the Panasonic VariCam. “We thought we could do better with a higher data rate – keep the same look but just allow a bit more control,” says Gourley. Outpost conformed the project to OpenEXR for

an ACES workflow and completed the pre-grade vfx, reframing and correcting any image integrity issues to create the final Netflix archive master ahead of a sensitive, filmic Dolby Vision HDR grade and SDR conversion at Narduzzo Too. “Just because you have that latitude, you don’t always need to maximise it,” says Narduzzo Too colourist, Harry Conquest. “Less is more. The last thing you want is for someone to look at a programme and say, “Oh my God, look at that grade!’,” agrees Narduzz0. Running to a very tight delivery schedule, the

graded project was returned to Outpost for IMF delivery and full QC with the last programme delivered after Lockdown without any issues.

RICKY GERVAIS Once again it was a stress-free pleasure grading After Life 2 with the calm, cool, collected Vince. This year has proved hard for most people, having to spend months alone in the same room speaking to no one and only seeing the world through TV. Vince didn’t even notice there was a pandemic. CHARLOTTE DEAN Once again Narduzzo Too and Outpost provided impeccable service for season two of After Life and it was a pleasure for everyone working with them again. The schedule was incredibly tight, and they went above and beyond to make it all happen and get it delivered in an extraordinarily
