THE CRISIS THAT HAS ACCELERATED CHANGE Many have described the COVID-19 crisis as the great accelerant, as a fuel that has super-charged societal and technological change and forced through transformations in a few short months that were happening anyway, but that could have otherwise taken years to complete. That’s certainly true of large areas of the television and film industry.


The blow to the industry has been as hard as for any other sector with physical production of all kinds hitting a brick wall as lockdown locked down. Other links in the chain may have had a more delayed reaction, post and vfx notably as it initially ran on production’s fumes, but the hit still came. But while it’s tough to find positives, there have been some. Lockdown


forced businesses to try home working for staff, and most found that, actually, it’s not that bad. It seems inconceivable now that a mix between home and office working won’t be standard practice in the future bringing with it the benefits of a better work/life balance. The air has been clearer too. The TV and and film industry, already


making great strides to be greener, has realised that perhaps not everyone has to travel to the set, that some processes can be done very well remotely, perhaps that meeting could be on Zoom. Technology, or the adoption of it, has been revolutionised too. Working


in the cloud has been possible for a while now, and many have at least partially adopted it but were held back by high costs and lack of client demand. COVID again has moved the tech forward, will start to drive down costs and has made clients a lot more comfortable with perceived security issues. In wider society, the Black Lives Matter movement was superheated in

the pressure cooker of lockdown and that heat seems to have spread to the TV industry too. It’s been noticeable how announcements and promises around the issue of diversity have accelerated in recent months and the moves at least seem to have much more solid foundations now than at any time in the past. Though it would be ridiculous to suggest that the coming months will


be anything but incredibly difficult for everyone, there are chinks of light. High end drama and film particularly has been a spectacular success story for UK PLC in recent years. It will be a long time before it’s back in full force, but the signs are it will be back again eventually.
