Current affairs Importance of certification
Although it may be onerous, the way forward should be for every fabricator to have an initial type test to ensure that they or the manufacturers are constructing the doorset to exactly the same specification and tolerances as the systems/component provider. I believe that all certification for fire and security should be based on some primary test evidence in the final fabricator’s name. This exists in the security world already. We believe that certification remains
the best and only way to assure that effective, quality products are delivered to market. Certification in the security sector provides regular testing and production audits to ensure effective product control, and that the same specification and quality is maintained over time. What we have done with security shows that certification works. SBD is continuing its work with the
fire service on providing best access into buildings for emergency purposes, whilst maintaining building security at all other times. We will be submitting our views when the opportunity arises to change ADB. From 19 July to 11 October 2018, the MHCLG has been running a consultation to seek views on proposed clarification of ADB,
and to set out the government’s plans for further work on a wider technical review of ADB. The MHCLG is looking at different options
as to the best way forward. SBD believes that the way we have worked with the security sector over the past 20 years could become an effective model for fire certification in the future. SBD and the Door Hardware Federation (DHF) have been united in their calls for the delivery of quality products on site, and third party certification is central to this requirement. Bob Perry, chief executive office of the
DHF, commented: ‘DHF’s position has not changed since we launched our campaign in December 2017. Our message is simple: we are calling for fire-resisting doorsets manufactured, installed and maintained through UKAS accredited third-party certification.
‘DHF has supported the certification
process for many years, particularly in areas relating to security and we believe that it is a natural progression to now apply certification to critical safety products such as fire doors.’
