Library protected by Hochiki systems

THE BULGARIAN National Library in Sofia has received life safety systems developed by Hochiki and installed by provider Sectron. Dating back to 1881 and featuring

‘treasures with significant national importance’, the library was destroyed in WWII and rebuilt in the 1950s. Sectron was tasked with replacing its 20 year old life safety system, described as ‘no longer fit for purpose’. The system needed to offer ‘enhanced performance and reliability without compromising the aesthetics of the building’, as well as have functionality to ‘network a range of devices’ due to multiple solutions being required. Sectron specified Hochiki’s hybrid

wireless fire detection range FIREwave, which Hochiki stated ‘uses the latest radio technology to provide a simple yet effective fire detection solution’ that causes ‘minimal disruption to the fabric of a building’. The system integrated ‘seamlessly’ with a pre installed cabled fire system that also operates on the company’s enhanced safety protocol (ESP), so Sectron had ‘more choice when it came to selecting the appropriate field device’. Georgi Kolev, product manager at Sectron, commented:

‘The Bulgarian

National Library is a jewel in the crown of our capital city. When specifying a new life safety system for this project, we had to address a number of different challenges, from the age and structure of the building, to the need for simple installation and ongoing maintenance. ‘Working closely with our design and engineering team, Hochiki Europe was able to recommend and supply a range of solutions to meet these specific project requirements. This means our national relics are now protected with the highest standards of life safety equipment.’ Petia Simeonova,

regional sales

manager at Hochiki Europe, added: ‘FIREwave is one of our most flexible product ranges when it comes to architecturally challenging installations. By removing the need for hard-wired cabling in our life safety systems, we’re able to provide a solution that is ideal for a wide range of buildings, from busy hotels to heritage buildings like the Bulgarian National Library. ‘The new installation looks fantastic and I’m delighted that we were able to support a project of such national importance.’

Kentec launches new relay unit A NEW four way relay unit for conventional and addressable extinguishing systems has been released by Kentec. This unit will ‘enable key maintenance to

be undertaken without compromising safety’ and allows for third party systems connected to the fire alarm panel to be isolated for repairs and maintenance. This means that systems including security or access control can be repaired ‘without compromising the integrity of the overall installation’. Volt free contacts in the unit mean that

voltages are ‘kept completely separate’, which increases ‘overall system safety’. Four

pairs of relay contacts rated up to 125VDC at five amps or 250AC at 10 amps are housed in a ‘robust sheet steel enclosure’, and can be operated using switch negative signals from ‘up to four’ control panels. For each relay,

isolated switches and status LEDs

are provided. Kevin Swann, managing director of

Kentec, added: ‘The 4-Way Relay Unit enables easy isolation for installers and engineers, and with relays each up to 10 amps it has the capacity to isolate high power equipment. It is the ideal demarcation point for third party equipment.’

DAFO VEHICLE Fire Protection is contributing to a research project studying electric and hybrid vehicle fire risks, funded by the Swedish innovation agency Vinnova.

‘Strategic vehicle research and innovation’, will look particularly at lithium ion battery risks, with Swedish testing organisation RISE initiating the project at the start of May.
