President Denis on the tools!

If Rotary President Denis Spiller was unfamiliar with the workings of a spade, that changed on his official visit to Southern Wales in June. We saw quite a lot of Denis Spiller at Centenary events in the District. But it was great to see him for his official visit in June, which concluded with an inspiring speech at District Council.

During this visit he presented a painting to

Tracey Burke of Cancer Aid, Dowlais, at the garden of the Macmillan Cancer Care Unit in Prince Charles Hospital where he also planted a rose bush to commemorate the Rotary Merthyr Tydfil’s ninetieth anniversary. The club then hosted him for lunch. Denis then moved to Cardiff where he visited the Whitchurch Rotakids Club. They gave Denis an excellent presentation on their school and Rotakids activities then he helped them plant a tree in their quiet garden next to their special bench.

He went on to Rotary Newport Uskmouth Evening Satellite group and attended a garden party to mark the official opening of their Men’s Sheds project.

Friday morning Denis visited Cardiff Breakfast’s Centenary garden outside Whitchurch Library when Denis and PDG

Maggie each planted a rose bush. Then went to visit RC Cowbridge where they gave a presentation on several of their projects including working to make the town a Dementia Friendly community. Denis was very impressed with the club’s pioneering scheme to present branded doormats to businesses that are Dementia Friendly. Alison Evans (then President Elect of Llanelli Rotary) showed Denis the work they have funded at Heol Goffa special school. He also visited an edible garden a project developed with local school- children and Cefn Sidan Rotary. He spent some time with the Wales Air Ambulance before enjoying lunch with Llanelli Rotary who were celebrating their Club Centenary. At an informal evening dinner to discuss the forthcoming merger of Swansea and Swansea Bay clubs, he presented Swansea Rotary President Mervin John with an award for the clubs outstanding contribution to Rotary Foundation.
