Clubs rally round to build a floor
The one stumbling block in a new undergraduate programme for Emergency, Pre-hospital and Immediate Care, at the University Hospital of Wales (UHW) in Cardiff was a specialist clinical floor.
An essential component of the programme required a Simulator and Education Suite mirroring a real emergency facility, containing defibrillators, simulated ECG machines, ultrasound and monitors.
But nothing could be installed until the £2000 floor was laid. Heather Guy of
Cardiff Breakfast thought that with the help of neighbouring Rotary clubs, this was achievable. As a result of Heather’s e-mails and telephone calls to clubs in Area 4 (Cardiff’s eight clubs with Dinas Powis and Barry) the full £2000 was subscribed within two weeks. “With the help of Cardiff University, Cardiff & Vale UHB and the Rotary Clubs in Cardiff, Barry and Dinas Powys we now have a superb space to do this training, and at the same time provide a far better experience for the undergraduate medical students rotating through the department on their ‘Hospital Front Door’ block in their third year of the undergraduate degree at Cardiff University,” said Dr Huw Williams, Lecturer in Clinical Medicine at the opening. Fund raiser defies storm force winds
After four days of storm force winds and rain and yet another torrential downpour early on Sunday morning the event was very nearly cancelled but organisers held their nerve and were rewarded when the weather changed dramatically around 11.00am.
Supported by several clubs, including the Rotary Clubs of Porthcawl and
Cardiff Breakfast, Bridgend Rotary President, Hopkin Joseph, greeted over 220 attendees, who were treated to a recital of Welsh harp music from Lowri Phillips, the accomplished Bridgend based harpist. Dr William Williams - Event Organiser opened the assembly- speaking first in his first language welcoming all attendees in particular the principal guests the High Sheriff of Mid-Glamorgan John Wall and Mrs Wall, The Mayor of Bridgend County Borough John McCarthy and Mrs McCarthy – both John and Judy are members of RC Bridgend, and Brian and Mrs Liz Lakin – Brian is Chairman of the Tenovus “Closer to Home” Appeal and also High Sheriff of South Glamorgan. Brian explained the aims of the Appeal, confirming that it has to date been very successful, and the new mobile unit will be launched in October; he told everyone that it was a World Leader in size and technology. During the lunch Lowri played again whilst everyone ‘tucked in’ to a super
buffet meal provided by Cath Jones of “A Taste of Class” and her helpers. After coffee the meeting was entertained by Athena. Athena is Gwawr Edwards, Sioned Terry and Ellen Williams who during the last twelve months have appeared on television, performed at numerous events across the UK and overseas and broadcast on radio. They delighted their audience with a selection of melodies in Welsh, Italian and English, including a very moving rendition of “Calon Lan” to the tune of “The Rose”.
Athena then performed again for the second part of their concert, with the three sopranos finishing with a resounding selection of Shirley Bassey “Bond” songs. Pictured, President Hopkin presents bouquets to the performers.
A Bridgend Rotary Autumn Luncheon in September has raised over £7,000 for the Tenovus “Closer to Home” Appeal for a new mobile chemotherapy unit.
Rtn Dr. William Williams has been presented with the Bridgend “Rotarian of the Year Shield” for 2017-18 in recognition of his outstanding support and fundraising as Chairman of the club’s International Committee, for R.E.M.I.T (Rotary Eliminating Malaria in Tanzania). The presentation was made by Bridgend President Hopkin Joseph (above). Dr Williams spearheaded the work of the club’s International Committee and its fundraising efforts via a 10k run with a “just giving” website plus the support of club members, friends, family and an evening of music by a group of volunteers. Dr Williams raised over £5,000 by his own physical exertions. With the close association with Heronsbridge School, and support of Penybont FC, sufficient funds were raised to buy 1500 mosquito nets, enough for three schools.
