MACHEN Tredegar House has enjoyed a major refit

and is now a fascinating place to visit. Both the house itself and the gardens surrounding are more than worth a visit. Tribute has been paid to John Newton one of the garden volunteers and a member of Machen Rotary. Due to his support and recommendation, his club has donated 150 young trees in readiness for the replanting of the woodland this autumn. We have received a mixture of Cherry, Oak, Beech, and Hazel from the woodland trust thanks to Machen Rotary.

Secondly to the amazing achievement of the whole team who help create and plant our two new bedding displays in the Cedar garden. Machen has again been active. Help was given at the Caerphilly Big Cheese, jointly with Caerphilly Lions, with diabetes testing in July and a major support role was provided in collecting gate money for the Machen Agricultural Show earlier in July. Howard Hughes presented a cheque for £2500 at the club president’s evening dinner in June to Dr Madler as a donation to the Royal Gwent Acute Cardiac Unit raised for his NY Marathon run.

In all, 90 people, including DG Clive and two very recent DGs attended the lunch. In addition to an excellent meal we were very well entertained by our young friends from LARS (Loud Applause Rising Stars) under the leadership of Rotarian Cerith Owens. This year three young performers, Lauren Fisher, Daisy Owens and Jack Owens were the stars accompanied by Catrin Hughes (pictured).

Tredegar House

It was also another first as the event was organised by the newest members of the club who only joined in January this year. They were also the first ladies to join the club since its inception over 40 years ago making us a dual gender club.

The event was a sell out, with over 60 people the number that can be accommodated in the House. It was organised to raise funds for Bishop Willigers Girls School in Uganda, a project that the club has been involved with for over seven years. The fundraising for the school is all channeled through a Trust in Somerset with a close association with Morriston, which means that any money that is raised is “ring fenced” and is spent for the purposes that it was raised.

Overall the afternoon was a tremendous success, including the weather which was kind, and the total raised was just a whisker short of £1000. We hope to double this with our application for Matched Funding.

MUMBLES Machen also sponsored two students on

the Youth Exchange programme- photos of Chris St Leger, club president with the Rachel Knight and Nikkita Carnell.

MAESTEG Mumbles Rotarians and guests enjoyed

their Annual Champagne Lunch at Langland Bay Golf Club. Over £1800 was raised and shared between two local charities - Talking Hands who, without any Local or National Government support, provide sign language training in a Youth Club for young people in Swansea, and Forget Me Not who do fantastic work for people with dementia and their families.

Meidrim RotaKids are recycling their plastic bottles to make an Eco Greenhouse. What a great thing to do in the fine weather of the summer.

Recently a tripartite meeting was held in Narberth between the Rotary Club, Round Table and 41 Club. The three clubs have agreed to work together to provide a pool of volunteers to assist in community projects when required. The annual Duck Race, BBQ, Pig Roast and

Vegetarian Stalls were held at Cresswell Quay, courtesy of the Evans brothers, landlords at the Cresselly Arms. The event is always held when there is a high tide so spectators will see a flotilla of small sailing and motor boats anchoring at the harbour wall for a couple of hours.

President Robert’s main priority for his year is to try and increase membership of the club which at present has nine members with only six active. He intends to maintain the activities already carried out at the club such as organising the annual fireworks display, sending students to the Rotary youth leadership course on the Brecon Beacons and sending primary schoolchildren out for a day at Gower Heritage centre. To this end the club organised a bucket collection at Tesco Maesteg. Pictured above at President Robert’s handover.
