NEW PerkinElmer MuviCyte™ live-cell imaging system: never miss a moment
L
ive-cell imaging is a vital tool in the study of cellular functions, disease mechanisms and responses to treat-
ments. Unlike traditional fixed-endpoint assays which give a point-in-time snap- shot of cellular responses, live-cell imag- ing provides more physiologically-rele- vant information and a fuller picture of the effects of perturbations over longer periods of time. The new MuviCyte™ live-cell imaging system from PerkinElmer enables you to monitor cells over hours, days or weeks.
Keeps cells healthy To keep cells healthy for studies longer than a few days, they must be kept in a controlled environment. The MuviCyte live-cell imaging system is designed to oper- ate inside a cell culture incubator so that cells can be maintained under optimal con- ditions for long-term kinetic assays. The system is controlled by an external PC, allowing remote observation of cells, which helps to keep the culture chamber constant- ly at the required levels of temperature, CO2 and humidity.
Supports flexible assays The open stage design of the MuviCyte system provides the flexibility to use the culture vessels of your choice, eg petri dishes, flasks and microplates, as well as microfluidics platforms. To image cells under hypoxic conditions, the system can operate inside a hypoxia incubator. The instrument can also be run on the bench- top with its lid. The brightfield imaging channel enables
label-free observation of cells and the three-colour fluorescence imaging channels – red, green and blue – enable you to select from a wide range of fluorescent markers to analyse specific cell functions. The sys- tem is supplied with 4x, 10x and 20x objective lenses plus digital zoom, giving you appropriate magnifications for appli- cations ranging from scratch wound assays to single cell analysis.

the cells of interest, from small cell colonies to entire wells. l Image stitching – for observation of larg- er objects such as tissue sections, stem cell colonies, or even an entire well. l Z-stacking – for imaging of 3D objects or thicker samples such as spheroids.
Analyse and share data The MuviCyte system features built-in image analysis software for commonly- used assays such as cell health and viability, apoptosis, proliferation, transfection effi- ciency, reporter gene assays and optional software for scratch wound and spheroid assays. This helps to make image quantifi- cation easier, faster and more reliable than with a manual microscope. The flexible movie-making software pro-
Advanced assay optimisation To help achieve better results from your assays, the MuviCyte system incorporates several advanced features: l Image-based autofocus – keeps cells in focus regardless of the sample carrier. l Custom autofocus – allows you to focus on defined structures within cell samples by setting an offset for the autofocus. l Unlimited and flexible imaging positions (fields of view) – freely positions imaging sites within each well to help you capture

vides a great way to gain more realistic and meaningful insights into cell behaviour and responses. It includes several movie modes (single, sequence and matrix), enabling you to compare multiple wells side-by-side, interpret cell responses and share data with colleagues. The open data format means you can easily access data and set the image format to a variety of common options. For more advanced applications such as cell population analysis, texture analysis, neurite analysis or single cell tracking, MuviCyte images are compatible with PerkinElmer’s Columbus™ Image Data Storage and Analysis System.
Time to focus on science The automated operation of the MuviCyte system reduces hands-on-time and the risk of user-error compared to working with a manually-operated research microscope, allowing you to spend your time focusing on experimental design and analysis. And with the PerkinElmer OneSource® global on-site service network of local engineers, instrument downtime is minimised.
