CRAFTBUTCHER l MARCH 2018 Spring is the time for fresh ideas

Michael Richardson Independent Retail Sector Manager

The recent AHDB Pork campaign has worked hard at communicating to consumers that cuts of pork are available that are high in protein and low in fat*, through messages like pork medallions being just as healthy as chicken breast**.

Loin and fillet medallions, the hero cuts of the campaign, have featured in a range of healthy recipes on the Love Pork website and social media channels. All recipes are green across the nutritional traffic light system and offer light, quick and easy midweek meal options.

With consumers tending to reach for lighter options at mealtimes during the spring months, it’s a key time to promote leaner cuts of pork and healthy recipe ideas.

Visit lovepork.co.uk to find out more about the campaign and recipes.

AHDB Beef & Lamb has also been busy communicating the many positive health benefits of Beef & Lamb to consumers during early 2018. Beef and Lamb is packed full goodness thanks to being naturally rich in protein & nutrients, and can play a vital role as part of a balanced diet, and we don’t want people to forget it.

Lamb can often be referred to as something to enjoy just as a treat, something for the weekend. But Lamb contains many nutritiously beneficial vitamins and minerals that contribute to a healthy diet. Something that is too often overlooked, particularly with many consumers opting for leaner and leaner proteins.

It shouldn’t be forgotten that Lamb is also rich in protein, supporting the growth and maintenance of muscles. To add to that Lamb also provides four essential vitamins (Niacin, vitamin B6 & B12 and pantothenic acid) which help to reduce tiredness and fatigue. Who couldn’t do with some of that?

The website SimplyBeefandLamb.co.uk has a range of recipes to help inspire consumers to cook with Beef & Lamb, as well as information on the nutritional benefits of Beef and Lamb through the different stages of life.

The focus is likely to be on lamb roasting joints with Easter on its way. Lamb leg roasting joints will be the obvious cut of choice for many. I mentioned in my Easter article about other roasting options to help use the whole carcase, and rightly so. Now I just want to give a mention to other options that will help your customers see that lamb can be versatile, convenient and not necessarily as expensive as many think. Lamb mince for koftas or meatballs fit the bill and may be a good way to use some of the shoulder and breast. The 3-bone mini-rack is a great way to use the loin and keep with the idea of versatility and convenience as well as tasty and healthy. These could be good options for you to present lamb as an ‘impulse’ purchase in and around Easter time when the attention will be on lamb leg roasting joints.

As always there is further information about the butchery specs and profit potential on our website www.qsmbeefandlamb.co.uk or feel free to give me a call to talk any of this through on 07790 173625.
