BEHIND THE COUNTER


GEORGE Debman joined the Federation’s Executive Council as a member of the board last July, representing the Eastern region alongside Past President Philip Edge. A committed member


of the NFMFT, George has represented his members as Secretary of the Colchester & District Butchers Association and at countless Annual Members Meetings playing an active role in debate, while supporting his mother Mary and wife Carol raising funds on behalf of the Federation’s Ladies Section for University College London (UCL) Children’s Cancer Unit. Based in the shop opened


by his father in Cliff Lane, Ipswich when the family moved from Romford Essex in the 1960’s. George has


established an unrivalled reputation with customers for quality meat at honest prices and amongst members for ‘in house’ promotions and on-site ‘behind the counter’ demonstrations. As with most, following


the Christmas and New Year rush George says January can be quiet but you won’t find him resting on his laurels. Like many he was already planning forthcoming promotions to get customers through the door. BREAKFAST WEEK –


provided George with an opportunity to promote Sausage, Bacon and Eggs. BURNS NIGHT – although


traditionally focussed on large ceremonial events these days many customers celebrate this date in the calendar with haggis too.

always a winner, either doing a pack for a complete meal or a steak promotion, so it’s always worth speaking to wholesalers to see what they can offer! MOTHERING SUNDAY


– shortly on the horizon and George has already spoken to a garden centre about Primulas, when last year he sold 200 alongside Sunday joints... at a price! Before you know it


the BBQ season will have come and gone followed by HALLOWEEN, UK and BRITISH SAUSAGE WEEK along with GUY FAWKES and Christmas will be upon us once again! However, George says the


turn of the year is not just about promotion but also about catching up with the jobs that have been neglected. While keeping the diary free for NATIONAL BUTCHERS WEEK, FOODEX and the
