Feed Ingredients … Protein Products

ALLTECH Are you feeding for more sustainable agriculture? In ruminant production systems, 75–95% of dietary nitrogen consumed as feed protein is excreted in manure and urine. This wasted nitrogen is due to the generally low nitrogen utilisation efficiency of ruminants. For more than a decade, Alltech has been working with feed formulators and dairy and beef farmers globally to address nitrogen losses and develop more rumen and environmentally friendly feeding strategies. Integral to this has been the use of an innovative protein ingredient called Optigen®

that provides a controlled

release of non-protein nitrogen (NPN) over time. This promotes maximum nitrogen utilisation in the rumen, reduces nitrogen excretion and reduces the risk of elevated nitrogen transfer into the blood and associated toxic effects. The controlled and continual supply of ruminal ammonia with Optigen serves to meet the rumen microbes’ nitrogen needs more effectively than other sources, such as straight feed urea. This leads to more efficient use of dietary nitrogen, an increase in microbial protein supply to the cow and a reduction in nitrogen excretion. As a concentrated nitrogen source, Optigen takes up less space

in the diet compared with other nitrogen sources (such as soybean meal and rapeseed meal), leaving room for more rumen-friendly materials, such as home-grown forages. The environmental benefits of Optigen are evident through the replacement of soybean in the ration, but also substitution of other high protein concentrates in combination with improved production efficiency. A meta-analysis study examining the effects of Optigen

supplementation in dairy cows was recently completed and it highlighted that the use of Optigen in dairy diets resulted in a carbon saving of about 54 g CO2-eq/kg milk. So, for example, what would it mean if the entire Dutch dairy herd was fed Optigen? When extrapolated to the annual milk output produced from the Dutch dairy sector, this would be equivalent to a carbon emission reduction of 574,004 tonnes CO2-eq. Such a carbon saving represents 10% of the entire reduction target for agriculture and land use sectors required by the Dutch government by 2030. Could Optigen be part of your solution for more sustainable agriculture?

AZELIS Azelis has added the Roquette range of plant-based protein products to its Animal Nutrition portfolio. Highly concentrated and digestible potato, pea, wheat and corn proteins can be used as alternatives to or partly replace traditional proteins. TUBERMINE®

GP potato protein provides protein enrichment and

is known for its richness in essential amino acids available in higher amounts than in traditional proteins. The outstanding digestibility is particularly well suited to the young, newly-weaned animal’s high protein requirements and is well recognised as an excellent source of protein for piglet feed. LYSAMINE®

is a valued nutritional ingredient in many applications. Its excellent digestibility along with its naturally low antitrypsin activity makes it a protein of choice in the nutrition of young animals particularly piglets. VITEN®

Vital wheat gluten natural protein extracted from wheat,

is a water-insoluble complex protein. Recognized especially for its high glutamic acid content, the

plant-based protein shows exceptional digestibility and can be used in the formulation of high-performance feeds by limiting the risk of non- digested protein in the large intestine. It is a useful alternative protein source which is appreciated in milk substitutes and piglet feed for its excellent digestibility, colour and palatability. GLUTALYS®

corn gluten meal is a highly digestible protein

concentrate rich in sulphur amino acids (methionine cystine). A polyvalent protein source, it offers advantages in formulas for ruminants because of the low natural degradability of the protein fraction in the rumen and its high post ruminal digestibility E-mail Azelis Animal Nutrition at: nutrition@azelis.com or call +44 1928 793090 for further information.
