Nutritional emulsifier As a third generation nutritional emulsifier, Excential Energy Plus, is known for its effect on energy digestibility. While increased fat digestion is the main focus, the digestibility of other nutrients (e.g. crude protein) is also important. Several faecal metabolic studies by Orffa provide insight into these effects. The results show that Excential Energy Plus is able to increase energy, crude fat, dry matter and crude protein digestibility on average by 76 kcal/kg (AMEn), 2.81%, 1.41% and 1.68%, respectively. Excential Energy Plus has its applications in many animal species. Although fat digestion and metabolism dif fer between species, the principle remains the same. The key to absorption of fatty acids in both monogastric, ru- minant and aquatic species is the formation of complexes (micelles) in the intestine which are being stabilised, mainly by bile salts (which are natural emulsifiers). As the di gestion of fat and other nutrients is never complete and a remainder can be found in the faeces, the addition of a nutri tional emulsifier is therefore of interest to enhance the utilisa tion of fat and other nutrients by the animal and improve their performance. An extensive research project set up by Orffa shows the positive effects in other animal species. Excential Energy Plus stimulated laying hens to increase egg production in the early phase as well as in later phases. In turkeys, its application resulted in reduced feed costs but similar performance, whilst improving faecal dry matter, foot pad dermatitis and liver fat content. Improved performance was seen in growing-fattening pigs when applying the nutritional emulsifier on top. In aquatic species (e.g. tilapia) the product improved performance while reducing oxidative stress in the liver. Website:
