In this other study, growers with similar start weight to the
present study were assigned to two diets containing soybean meal and soybean meal supplemented with β-mannanase at 0.05%. β-mannanase increases the digestibility of amino acids as it decreases the digesta viscosity by hydrolysing the bonds between mannan units – it also increases the release of encapsulated nutrients in the complex structure of cell walls. The standardized ileal digestibility of all AA in HF was higher
than in soybean meal (with or without supplement) except for phenylalanine. But the SID of BSF was lower for all the AA compared to soybean meal (with or without supplement) (Figure 1). Previous studies also show that the digestibility of AA in HF is better than of soybean meal or fish meal. This means that HF and BSF may be used as alternative protein sources to replace the soybean meal or fish meal in pig feed since their AA digestibility are similar.
Concluding remarks The digestibility (AID and SID) of all AA in HF is greater than in BSF, and the differences are attributed to their contents of fat, CP, and chitin. It would be interesting to determine whether these effects of AA digestibility in HF and BSF translate to a similar pattern on growth
performance of pigs. Previous studies show that the digestibility of AA in HF is better than of soybean meal or fish meal. The current study shows that the digestibility of AA in HF, BSF, and soybean meal are similar, reinforcing the potential of HF and BSF as alternative protein sources to replace soybean meal or fish meal in pig diets.
