Organic feed prices have risen rapidly since 2017 so that the MPFC has been below 1 since early 2019: It is more important than ever for organic farmers to focus on milk
from forage and reduce concentrate inputs. This involves constantly improving the production, grazing and conservation of high quality grass and forage crops. Whether organic or conventional, dairy farming will continue to face
its own challenges as it always has. The phasing out of BPS payments (which have provided a cross subsidy to milk price) from 2021 to 2027 being one. Another is the potential outcome of the ongoing Brexit negotiations which will have a more immediate impact. As I wrote this, a deal is looking more likely while talks continue…. The message for farmers is unchanged, look within their own
business for improvements because of the almost inevitability of a volatile dairy industry for the years ahead.
