for the period. 2019’s total of 7,100 tonnes was 4,800 tonnes or 40.3 per cent lower than the record high for the quarter amassed a year previously and was 1,900 tonnes or 23.6 per cent below the mean for the timeframe.
All subsectors of sheep feed fell below their year earlier counterparts. Coarse mixes and blends for sheep dropped by the most substantial amount, 2,000 tonnes or 52.6 per cent, to plummet to the lowest level of output this decade of 1,800 tonnes. Breeding compounds for sheep fell by 1,500 tonnes whilst growing and finishing compounds for sheep declined by 1,400 tonnes to 1,300 tonnes and 4,000 tonnes respectively, decreases of 53.6 per cent and 25.9 per cent. Total other feed reached its highest ever total for the third quarter
in 2019, the 18,800 tonnes of output surpassed the year previous total by 3,500 tonnes or 22.9 per cent. The 10 year average for the period, of 14,100 tonnes was also exceeded by 4,700 tonnes or 28.6 per cent. The feed production figures for the third quarter in Northern Ireland reflect the pattern that has emerged throughout the entirety of 2019 data available to date. Largely that, despite a general reduction from the unrivalled outputs from 2018, feed production, on the whole, remains strong when viewed in the context of a wider timeframe. Once again, there is a clear split between the ruminant and non-ruminant sectors, especially with pig feed production continuing to rise and staying historically strong whilst sheep feed continues to return historically low outputs.
