NEW HOMES • NEW DEVELOPMENTS Scrapping tolls will provide boost to Welsh property market
Teresa May’s pledge to scrap toll charges on the Severn Bridge will provide a great boost to the property market in South Wales, according to Bellway. Tolls will no longer be charged on the bridge from 2018 aſter the Conservative Party was re-elected in the general election. Highways England will take ownership of the crossing next year from Severn Crossings plc, which was given the right to charge tolls for 25 years in 1992, aſter constructing a second crossing. Te move is estimated to benefit around 25 million drivers every year, and boost the economy in both Wales and England by around £100m. House prices in Bristol and Bath have risen by 23 per cent and 21 per cent respectively since 2014 according to Rightmove. Te average house sold for £287,966 in Bristol last year, compared
being removed, we expect more people to follow suit. “Te savings which can be made on comparable homes are quite remarkable. We’ve already seen first-time buyers who couldn’t afford to buy in the South West move to South Wales to purchase a first home, as well as people who have been able to upsize to a larger home by selling their property in the South West. “Tis will certainly provide a boost to the Welsh property market,

Sales Manager for Bellway’s Wales division, Carly Maidment, said the housebuilder was expecting to see a surge of interest from buyers looking to get value for money by buying in the region. She said: “Scrapping the tolls on the Severn crossing will undoubtedly open
up a new market of home-hunters who are looking to take advantage of the value the homes in South Wales offer. “Bristol and the South West has been one of the fastest rising regions in the UK in terms of house prices. People who work in places such as Bristol and Bath have already been looking to move to South Wales to take steps on to the property ladder. Now with the tolls
we’re expecting to see an increase in visitors from the South West to our developments over the coming months.” Bellway’s Wales division is currently building a number of developments across South Wales, in locations including Cardiff, Newport and the Vale of Glamorgan.
