On the bridge Sally-Ann Konigkramer, a Master 3000gt Captain
talks with Frances and Michael Howorth about her career as a superyacht captain to date
What made you join the superyacht industry? I grew up on the eastern coast of South Africa, the ocean was always part of my life. I naturally took on the hobby of sailing, which led me to understanding I could make a career out of it. I was young and loved adventures, so I put being captain as my goal and didn’t look back.
What is your favourite cruising destination? All my places I cruise bring back memories of my career, or a specific time frame of my journey which is incredibly special. Bahamas is one of my favourite places, especially because I am a water sports fanatic. I do enjoy off the beaten track itineraries not only for the beauty but for the challenge too.
Which is your favourite Mediterranean port? Such a hard one, as all the good anchorages in the Mediterranean are so slammed! I love being docked in Bonifacio with the anchors out if that counts. I love the entrance to Bonifacio because it is so grand! I always get butterflies when I am about to enter the port.
Where is your favourite restaurant? Bar Dia in Palma Mallorca. My then captain and I would always go there for dinner or drinks after a long day at the shipyard. I became exceptionally good friends with the owner. Every time I was back on the island, despite years having gone by the owner would always take good care of me.
Why do you believe ethics, diversity and respect are important in our industry? Without these, you have no standard of culture onboard, no fully functioning team and most of all, no self-pride as a leader of that crew.
What have you ever learned from your crew? My previous engineer who is now a life long friend, taught me a lot about myself. He taught me that not all risks are worth it.
Describe your management style? Dynamic, pro-active and empowering. I promote a just culture onboard, everyone is accountable. We are a team, and we cross the finish line together.
What do you look for in crew when hiring them? The first thing for me is if they are competent for their position, thereafter if they are competent as a crew member for our team. Professionalism, integrity and self-respect are qualities I practice, I preach and what I search for in new crew.
How do you now promote equality onboard? By practicing it! Monkey see, monkey do.
What are the top three personality traits a modern day captain should have? Patience, fearlessness (not reckless) and integrity.
What are some challenges you faced on your way to the top?
I think the biggest challenge I faced and still face at times is the loneliness that comes with the territory and responsibility. It took me years to understand human emotions, which not only helped me become a better leader but helped me understand my meaning in the current journey I was in at that given time. I do not think being a woman changes anything. Any professional, well respected leader and mentor conducts themselves in the same manner, regardless of race or sex. I have always respected the duties of being captain with high standards and still strive to serve my team as best I can.
What are your passions outside work? Being outdoors with nature, away from the hustle and bustle. Being able to reconnect with myself to keep my headspace healthy. Whether that be by my enjoyment for high intensity workouts, motocross riding, hiking, camping or a simple relaxing day around family.
Where would you want to retire? An exclusive island that has surf, a spin studio and hot yoga studio. No traffic and minimal people. Don’t know if that exists.
What would you like to do when you cease being in command of a superyacht? Continue to mentor and grow others. Continue to make change for the better, in people, in the world, in my everyday life.
