NAVIGATOR

S’AVARADERO Located in a magnificent location, on the promenade of Es Pujols, this restaurant enjoys a beautiful panoramic view. Run by islanders, it offers traditional dishes but also an excellent meat proposal. In the varied menu, we recommend the mixed grilled meat that will allow you to taste different cuts, all of excellent quality. Very popular, booking is recommended especially if you want to dine on the terrace. €€€€ | Av. Miramar 32, Es Pujols

BLAT PICAT

A veggie heaven for breakfast, brunch and lunch. A super selection all made with love and attention and an eclectic range of smoothies, juices and dishes. Great atmosphere with wonderful staff and good value. They are especially well known for serving probably the best coffee the island offers. €€ | Carrer de Joan Castelló Guasch 30, Sant Ferran de Ses Roques

LA FRAGATA

First point is to make sure you book in advance then you won’t be disappointed. Attentive staff, incredible views and a nice wide range on the menu. One of those restaurants that if you go once you will immediate re-book for another visit. Plenty of creative seafood dishes and something for the meat lovers too with all dishes of a very generous size, so arrive hungry. And to wash it all down they have some very fairly priced cocktails and a decent wine list. Enjoy! €€€ | Platja Migjorn Carretera del Pilar de La Mola, 10.8km

DRINK / PARTY

KIOSKO 62 Take a detour to Cala Saona for a fortifying mojito at the Kiosko bar and climb up the south side of the red rocks to watch the sun go down. Dodge the flashy crowd at Gecko Beach Club and head to this unassuming wooden beach bar instead. We recommend the pomada, a cult island concoction of gin and a handful of lemon slices. It might not be reinventing the wheel, but it’s a refreshing way to kick- start an afternoon spent paddling in Migjorn’s shallow, powder-blue waves. €€ | Platja de Migjorn

PIRATABUS Started in the 1970s by a young boy named Pascual – nicknamed “Pirata” by locals – Piratabus began life as an abandoned bus, which then evolved into a beach shack when the bus was removed by law in the 1980s. A favourite among sunset-seekers, who flock to the shack most afternoons, this is the place to head for sundowners, good vibes and the occasional lively singalong. €€ | Playa Migjorn Km11

CHIRINGUITO PELAYO

Renowned in local circles as being the best beach shack in town for sardines and fried fish, this low-key wooden kiosk attracts a relaxed crowd of beach lovers looking to dodge the crowds. Plumb in the middle of a forest of soaring pines and sabinas, the leafy canopy offering precious shade during the hottest hours, gives a welcome break from the heat. €€€ | Playa Migjorn

BUCKET LIST

THE GREEN ROUTES A 130km network of well-maintained hiking and cycling trails, known as the green routes, criss-cross the island and serve to connect the sleepy, picturesque villages. As Formentera is mostly flat, walking and cycling through the lush countryside and along the sandy, asphalt and gravel tracks is a joy.

S’ALGA, S’ESPALMADOR ISLAND A regular 40 minute round-trip sails from La Savina to the peaceful, private island of S’Espalmador off the northern tip of Formentera and costs €22.50. Choose from sandy S’Alga beach, the coves of Cala de Bocs and Sa Torreta or wallow in mud in the central salt plain. Bring refreshments, sunscreen and parasol as there are no amenities.

LLEVANT On the Trucadors peninsula, east of popular Playa de Illetes, is the quieter and wilder Playa de Llevant within Ses Salines Nature Park. Its white sandy beach surprises with shaggy dunes, wooden footbridges, forestland and salt ponds.

WINE TASTING Formentera may be a sun-baked isle but it has sufficient rainfall and good soil to support two wineries, Bodega Terramoll in the South East and Cap de Barbaria in the South. Local grape varieties Fogoneu and Monastrell produce red wines and Prensal Blanc, Viognier, the whites. The range of wines are hearty and certainly pack a punch.
