NEPAL EARTHQUAKE T


HE earthquakes of 25th April and 12th May resulted in the deaths of


over 8,500 individuals and the injury of over 20,000. An estimated 505,000 private homes were destroyed and 279,000 partially damaged. Many NGOs are active in relief work, in cooperation with the Nepali Govern- ment.


A distinctive Christian response has been organised by Pastor Samuel Rai, in coordination with local government authorities. For this purpose ‘Grace Social Welfare Organisation’ – a government recognised and audited charity – was set up. This relief agency has the ad- vantage of local knowledge and contacts and has been able to reach remote places which have not received any other assistance. The following brief summary of this relief effort is based on a detailed report from Pastor Rai.


Surveys and emergency relief


Initially we sent out survey teams and medical teams, distributed goods and worked out our next steps for relief. In each community lists of surviving residents were compiled, with the help of local elders, and then used in the distribu- tion of aid. Twenty-two churches from in and around Pokhara pro- vided volunteers and
