Flush with success
The events industry has proved remarkably resilient over the years and it continues to be one of the most important markets served by SRP Hire Solutions, which has its headquarters in Coningsby, near Boston in Lincolnshire, and serves customers over the East Midlands and beyond. The company believes that a key reason for its steady growth is that it offers a comprehensive range of site equipment, acting as a single source of supply.
The fleet includes portable toilets, welfare cabins, site accommodation, fencing, crowd barriers, water bowsers, generators and lighting towers to clients in the events and construction industries. “We are developing SRP Hire Solutions as a trusted brand,” MD Nigel Ford told EHN. “Some other companies will re-hire equipment and offer ridiculously low rates, but then let customers down with poor service. If we ever had to get involved in price wars to win orders, I would rather close the business. I originally worked in the construction industry, as a joiner, and I saw first-hand the problems that can arise on a site when managers automatically choose the lowest quote without checking what they are getting.

from delivery and servicing through to collection afterwards, and we keep in close contact with people. Other companies who use central call centres to handle enquiries do not develop strong links with customers, and their staff do not really understand the equipment or what is involved in setting it up on site. You have to be passionate about what you do to succeed.
“I have also worked as a site agent managing construction equipment and again saw the shortcomings in the service offered by some hirers. Eventually, in 2002, a business partner and I decided to buy five portable toilets to hire out ourselves on a part-time basis.
“We also supplied these, along with other equipment, to a scooter rally in Skegness that I organised under the name Sticky Rock Promotions (SRP), adopting the name SRP Toilet Hire when the business grew to become a full-time operation in 2004. My partner left the operation four years ago, and last year we adopted the name SRP Hire Solutions to reflect the increasing diversity of our fleet.
“We established a second hire depot in Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, in 2009 to increase our geographical coverage, and in 2011 we re-located the Coningsby operation to a bigger site. In total we now have 23 employees, including two Service Managers, Simon Strowger who previously worked for other hire organisations, and Simon Dowse who joined from outside our industry.”

The SRP fleet currently comprises approximately 1,000 portable toilets, including Satellite, Shorelink and Polyportables models. A significant proportion is kept for use only at events to avoid risk of damage in a construction environment, and it is not uncommon for as many as 250 units to be supplied to a single, large event. The company undertakes all necessary servicing and cleaning work itself, and also offers this as a third-party service.
