Graham Arundell, MD of HAE I think most would agree

that the Brexit negotiations have lacked dexterity for such a landmark change for the UK. For business, large or small, uncertainty is driving up both risk and cost. Hire depends on the efficient movement of equipment, so smooth border arrangements and smart trading deals are required. If construction or housebuilding takes a knock, so will hire. We also depend on people;

are they going to be available in sufficient numbers and with skills or job-ready motivation?

An ageing workforce makes this vital. I've no doubt that simpler, bespoke arrangements on tendering, competency, skills attainment and safety via SafeHire and joint working with other like-minded organisations will help our members navigate what lies ahead.

Mark Ormond, MD of Manitou UK The UK is a major export market for the

Manitou brand. 90% of the company’s UK turnover is manufactured within the EU. We need to understand: 1) how the UK demand for products will change and, 2) how terms of trade will change once the UK leaves the EU. With product lead times ranging from

three to nine months, we are already placing orders on our factories for production post-Brexit. But we really don’t know if our customers will want them, and how the terms of trade will affect their delivery into the market. We assume that, for the transition period at least, everything will continue as it is today. Long-term, Manitou UK needs to know how Brexit will impact the finances of our customers and how UK/EU terms of trade will affect the products we bring into the market.

Paul Hay, MD of Trime UK

“ As every reader of

EHN will know, prompt delivery and short lead times are both vital elements in the equipment hire industry. As yet it is unclear what the customs arrangements relating to EU imported and exported goods will be after March 2019. But, whatever is eventually determined, we can assure our customers that the teams at Trime UK and Trime SpA will continue to work extremely hard to ensure unencumbered shipments to all our clients in the UK and elsewhere. Our hope is that the UK Government and EU officials recognise that

the smooth flow of goods across the Channel is critical and go on to negotiate appropriate arrangements to ensure that this continues.

Matt Thoumine, Sales & Operations Director with Project Hire and Sale

“ Two years ago, EHN

asked our opinion on Brexit and what it would mean to Project as a business. At that time my answer was that I didn’t think it would affect us here in Guernsey as we deal with ‘UK’ suppliers and our relationship with Europe was very much ‘via the UK’. Not long after the vote we began to see a lot of supplier

price increases which ranged from 3% to an eye-watering 10% on cost. This seemed to be a knee-jerk reaction to Brexit so we wait with interest to see if things level out. That’s if the EU should ever make up their minds!
