WHC staffer makes good Congrats to Melody Mayow, of WHC Hire's Tewkesbury depot, who
becomes the first woman to complete a plant hire NVQ at the company. Mel joined WHC in September 2018 as a hire desk assistant. Being
brought up around bikes and tools all her life, the plant hire industry was almost home from home. After joining the company, she quickly achieved qualifications in plant moving, practical assessment of scissor lifts, abrasive wheel fitting and emergency first aid at work. In 2019, she received funding through CITB to complete a Hire
Desk Operative Level 2 NVQ. In May 2021, she was promoted to hire desk supervisor, as she continued to study outside of work hours for her qualification. Due to the pandemic and associated setbacks, she has now been awarded her level 2 NVQ. Speaking of the promotion, Depot Manager Jack Clutterbuck said:
“Mel has been a fundamental addition to the WHC team at the Tewkesbury Depot. It is astonishing to see how she grown in confidence in the last four years. She has built fantastic relationships
Good vibrations A new product called ‘HAVSPRO’ enables the accurate monitoring of
workplace vibrations, and protects workers from hand arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) and Whole-Body Vibration (WBV). HAVSPRO provides consistent accuracy whatever the tool, whatever
the job, by measuring the vibration on the tool itself. Employees get real- time insight and alerts into their Exposure Action Value (EAV) and Exposure Limit Value (ELV) to keep them protected. At the heart of the new device are personalised sensors and dedicated
tool holsters. Each operator is allocated their own sensor, uniquely programmed with their specific values. Each tool has a holster bonded to the tool in line with BS 5349 and BS8041. The operator picks their tool, clicks the sensor into the holster and performs the job in hand – their points are sent to a cloud-based reporting platform for both HAV and WBV. When the operator reaches their EAV, the sensor flashes amber to
indicate the limit has been reached and that action should be taken. If they later hit 90% of the daily ELV, the device flashes amber and red to warn that they are approaching their limit, it will then flash red when they actually hit their limit. In all cases, text and email alerts can be set up for the operator, the supervisor and any other appropriate stakeholders. It’s as simple as that, really
– but effective, particularly when cumulative fines for HAVS since the start of 2020 already exceed £1.7M. Designed and manufactured in-house, HAVSPRO has been developed for any organisation where worker vibration might be an issue, including manufacturing, fabrication, local authorities, construction, groundscare and facilities management. with colleagues, existing and new customers, and most importantly grown as a person. Completing her NVQ during the pandemic was an incredible achievement and is a testament to her determination and willingness. She becomes the first woman to complete an NVQ at WHC and I’m determined to ensure she won’t be the last. A massive congratulations Mel from me and all of the team.”
