WASTE RECYCLING

VIP visit by MP and Oxford University at recycling plant

CONSERVATIVE MP Robert Courts visited the Sheehan Group to discover how the company is leading the way on recycling in the county.

Mr Courts was joined by Nicholas Field-Johnson, Head of Development at Oxford University, for a tour of the Sheehan Group’s advanced recycling plant in Oxford.

The water treatment facility is used to wash construction and demolition waste, destined for landfill, turning it into reusable aggregate.

In the past fi ve years The Sheehan Group, a construction and recycling company, has saved 500,000 tonnes of waste from UK landfi ll sites via the plant. Half of the recycled material is used in their own construction projects, and the rest is sold to contractors.

Witney MP, Mr Courts said: “I was delighted to meet everyone at Sheehan Group to visit their plant and learn more about their important work.

Sheehan are leading the way

“Instead of shipping waste abroad or putting it into landfi ll, we need to fi nd innovative and sustainable ways to reuse it. Sheehan are leading the way in this area, and I am delighted to have such a pioneering company based here in West Oxfordshire.”

Chris Sheehan, Managing Director of the Sheehan Group, said: “Recycling and sustainable construction is crucial for the UK and it is at the heart of our strategy and values as a business.

“It is important politicians and key decision makers understand the importance of what we are doing, and the scope there is to make construction in Oxfordshire much more sustainable.”

The company is due to appeal an Oxfordshire County Council planning decision that refused permission to increase

operational capacity at the plant from 100,000 tonnes to 175,000 tonnes per year.

Mr Field-Johnson joined Mr Court’s visit as part of the Sheehan Group’s relationship with Oxford University. The Sheehan Group has fully funded a scholar on the Master’s in Sustainable Urban Development course.

Tara Sheehan, Finance Director of the Sheehan Group, said: “We are thankful to Mr Courts and Mr Field-Johnson for taking the time to come and discover what we do as a company, and the difference we are making both environmentally and economically. “

The Sheehan Group was formed more than 40 years ago by John Sheehan, Chris’s father. It began as a machine hire business, and has grown into a civil engineering and recycling company employing more than 70 staff .

Ahern Waste settle on Molson Green

BASILDON-based Waste Management specialists Ahern Waste Management, founded in 1948, have expanded operations by adding a Sennebogen 821E (Right) and Kobelco SK140SRLC from Molson Green.

After 70 years in business, Ahern continues to grow and adapt in line with changes within the waste recycling industry.

After the addition of the 821E, Ahern are now able to off er a range of services from their sites in Basildon and West Thurrock. These services include waste collection, on-site compaction, material recovery facilities (MRF), energy from waste (EfW), while off ering land reclamation and restoration for sites.

Molson Green Sales Manager, Adam Meeking said: “Ahern Waste Management are seen within the industry as a progressive business. I have known the people at the company for many years and by using that understanding of their business, I was able to off er them the products right for what they wanted to achieve.

“The Sennebogen 821E was a perfect fi t for their waste transfer station after evaluating their requirements, and explaining the features and benefi ts of the 821E compared with competitors.”

Adam Smith, Ahern’s Basildon Site Manager, said: “The Kobelco SK140SRLC, which Molson supplied along with the 821E, is primarily used on site clearance work and land reclamation/ restoration jobs around the area, but can also be useful in our recycling centre during busy periods, and for fi ner picking.”

Weighing in at 24 tonnes with a reach of nearly 11 metres to 44 SHM May, 2018

the end of the arm, the 821E off ers an extensive working range. The rising cab function allows users in a waste environment full visibility when loading bins, to ensure no space is left unfi lled.

Powered by a Cummins 4.5l (160 Hp) direct injection, turbo charged power plant – the Bavarian gian t is not short on power.

The customer benefi ts of the Sennebogen 821E include an uninterrupted view from the cab through maximum joystick steering allowance - as there is no steering wheel and column obscuring the view of the driver.
