THREE owners of Porthmadog Skip Hire – based at the town’s Penamser Industrial Estate – have been jailed and ordered to pay almost £300,000 by Natural Resouces Wales (NRW) after offi cials found they were storing more waste than allowed at their yard.

Under the Proceeds of Crime Act, Joseph Gaff ey was ordered to pay £92,102, Patricia Gaff ey £86,729, and Michael Gaff ey was ordered to pay a staggering £113,293, after an alleged criminal benefi t of £1.5 million.

Paying to clear up site

The fi nes will be used to help pay for clearing the site after a decision was made by Judge Rhys Rowlands at a fi nancial hearing by the Mold Crown Court.

The three defendants have been ordered to pay the hefty fi nancial orders within three months.

Prosecuting barrister Michael Stables said NRW would then be able to refund the Welsh Government for the cost of clearing the site, so the public purse would not be out of pocket.
