New Boats Table

in association with the Spinlock Special Projects Team Flashing it up

Well, why ever not… When designer Marc Lombard was asked to add a little more oomph and pizzazz to his elegant Code 1 40-footer there was really only one thing to do

Foils on a series cruiser-racer? The current Code 1 is a good-looking monohull racer-cruiser produced by the Black Pepper shipyard in France. Built in carbon but with plentiful use of lightweight teak finishes, the yacht is notable both for a contemporary appearance which blends traditional materials with modern styling and proven good performance on the racecourse with the benefit of a 3m draft and a lightship displacement of just 4,000kg. For racing and passage making the Code 1 also features two modest- sized water ballast tanks set at maximum beam. Good cruising ability is not compromised, though, by the deep racing

draft, with the use of a long pivoting centreboard that allows sensible access to shallow waters with a reduced draft of just 1.15m when the board is up; the Code 1 remains very stable in this configuration for comfortable motoring (pulling it up carefully off the wind when racing only for fun does tend to confuse rivals…). However, by the end of the last Vendée Globe cycle Code 1 designer

Marc Lombard had decided that all the pointers were now in place for a relatively simple but potentially powerful performance upgrade to his four-year-old creation. At the same time the Black Pepper yard was becoming increasingly keen to freshen up the performance of a well-admired existing model. The first foiled Code 1 is now under construction at the yard and

will be launched in late April followed by at least two to three weeks of testing to fully understand the foils and identify the best way

Short list! Knierim Yachtbau

A three-metre draft on a 40-footer like this is not unimpressive; in fact, were it not being delivered via a lifting centreboard it would probably be labelled ‘a bit silly’. Relaunched with foils, the updated Code 1 from little-known French shipyard Black Pepper is going to see plenty of attention racing in the Med this summer

to employ them for later inclusion in the revised customer manual. The public debut – and first competitive appearance – of the new

boat will be at the Giraglia Rolex Cup which starts in June in St Tropez. With at least one standard Code 1 already entered in this year’s event the result should be interesting… especially to Marc Lombard. François Séguin
