level of media feedback from the boats now gives an insight into life onboard which has not been possible before. Asking the competitors to live with this amount of media scrutiny must create its own issues, but it does demonstrate to a wider audience the level of physical and mental toughness required of crews when you mix a demanding type of boat with the increased pressure of one-design competition. I think in common


with many I have always found it difficult to describe with any real meaning to non-sailors the experience of an offshore race with the challenges it brings. The Volvo reporting is one of several strands now available that are enabling a wider audi- ence to engage with this area of the sport. Meanwhile, our new


rating director Jason Smithwick has now watched his first certifi- cates being issued under the Spinlock 2018 IRC rule. IRC is subject to


continual review so that design developments are quickly accommo-


dated and as usual a few minor tweaks to the calculations have been introduced for this year. The pace and magnitude of developments in yacht and sail design are such that this is no easy task; the technical work is carefully co-ordinated and I have been impressed by the passion and commitment of both the Lymington rating office and its counterpart, the UNCL Centre de Calcul in Paris. Much has been written encouraging yachts to continue to


come to the Caribbean, participate in the regattas and visit the islands. I repeat that encouragement having just visited Dominica en route to the Caribbean 600, where the welcome was as warm as ever but the need for visitor revenues is very obvious with the huge clean-up and rebuilding programme that is underway. The start of our domestic season is also getting


closer with the Easter Challenge training regatta at the end of March, now with the benefit of our Cowes clubhouse where we look forward to welcoming all our competitors and visitors.
