Trixie 2, has also bred some interesting additions to the Trixie family, the latest being a McCutchen heifer born in July this year. Trix is just 17 months old, with both sire and dam still under four years old themselves, demonstrating the rapid pace of genomics. He is a third generation young genomic sire and already has cows in calf to him.

Evaluation A huge PLI of £660 reflects strong components (0.18% Fat and (0.12 % Protein), high daughter fertility (11.6), improved Lifespan (0.4) and low SCC (-18). These great production and fitness numbers are backed up with a two- point type merit score and a linear pattern without major weakness. He is a bull likely to moderate stature and size, while maintaining good feet and legs (1.71) and udder scores

(1.70). Trix is a young genomic sire with no daughters and as such his evaluation is modestly reliable (67% production and 62% type).

Andrew Rutter of Genus comments: “Trix is the highest UK bred bull available for PLI today. His breed leading combination of components, daughter fertility and Type delivers a PLI well into the 600’s making him a very special bull. He is backed by a true British cow family which is not only standing the test of time, but flourishing with each generation, chalking up great lifetime yields and proving that fertility promise each year. “Trix also has some bloodline uniqueness being the first Pesky son on the market and boasting a superb Mascol and Roxell in the direct pedigree. His dam is a balanced young cow, originally a contract for ABS if she had been a bull. This great uddered young cow is one of four sisters, all from

Mascol and all classified VG so far. The Mascol in the pedigree was one of the top rated PLI cows in the UK, with beautiful bone quality and great balanced frame. Behind her is a Roxell daughter, with Roxell being a high daughter fertility sire by the Roxy family.”

Using Trix

As with other young genomic sires, Trix is not recommended for use over a large portion of a herd by himself. He is best considered as part of a team of sires, spreading the risk of lower reliability across a number of bulls. He will naturally attract those breeders seeking to make elite matings for bull contracts and embryo work, with high PLI as their aim. Importantly, Trix is a prime example of the great genetics in the UK national herd and should inspire other UK breeders by seeing what can be achieved by identifying top foundation females.
