£1800 TOP AT BEESTON MONTH END SALE


DISPERSAL The Dispersal of Nicholas Loftus Farms’ entire Salwickhall Herd took place at Beeston Castle Auction on Monday 29th February. Trade was difficult and reflected the serious times being experienced in the dairy industry at present. There was plenty of bidding, but at considerably less than has been considered the norm in recent times. Top price was 1380gns for the Shottle daughter Salwickhall Poverty 67th

The Wright Marshall Month End Focus Milk Sale of pedigree and commercial dairy cattle including sections for the Western Holstein Club’s Focus Milk cattle, took place on Friday 26th February. The sale had 172 animals forward on the day with only two failing to find new homes. The bulk of the entry came from five different farms from Scotland, Norfolk, Lancashire and Cheshire, all of which were starting to disperse their herds and mainly comprised cattle that had calved since November and some even a bit longer. In the milking section quality was particularly good for the cows with some really good cows presented from those herds that are starting to disperse. The top seller was Bure Trembull Clare 10th consigned by Billockby Farms of Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. This second calver had given 11,000kg as heifer, calved her second in December and was sold giving 52kg. She was purchased by J F Owen and Sons, Overton-on- Dee for £1800.

2800gns FOR HOLSTEIN AT


KILREA Pedigree Holstein bulls met a ready market, selling to a top price of 2800gns at Holstein NI’s spring show and sale, held at Kilrea Mart. Sale leader was the November 2014-born Inch Sochar PLI £183 consigned by Inch Genetics based at Downpatrick. Sired by Raheenarran BCG Sochar, he is bred from Inch Goldwyn Vivan LP50 EX90-2E. Buyers were J and F Kyle, Stranocum, Co Antrim. Auctioneer Mark Stewart confirmed that the sale averaged £1480 per head with a 73% clearance.

Fisher’s Mellguards herd dispersal with a total of 72 successful buyers from 18 counties. Top price was one of the herd’s stock bulls Denmire Robuck, a Gillette Windbrook son backed by 12 generations of Excellent and VG dams. His dam produced more than 100t lifetime with numerous lactations over 16,500kg. Buying him at 4100gns was B and M J Nelson, Milnthorpe, Cumbria. Highest priced female in the sale at 2200gns selling to an undisclosed buyer was cover girl Mellguards Mel Jennifer. Classified VG88 she sold fresh in her second lactation and backed by three generations of Excellent or Very Good dams.
