for drier, longer days. Unfortunately, the future isn’t looking any brighter for the dairy industry in the next few months, however, it is clear that we work in a resilient industry, particularly judging by the mood at the recent UK Dairy Expo. UK Dairy Expo and Northern Ireland’s National Show are both reported in this issue with the best Holsteins in both countries being on show. This issue’s theme is league leaders and it has been interesting visiting some of the highest production and classified herds in the UK. fourth overall in the UK. Devon is this issue’s Club feature and Steve Murch’s Littleweir herd is in the spotlight, while Jess Tapp is the Devon HYB member profiled.
Other articles look at leading polled and red genetics, as well as breeding and feeding for excellence and I’ve challenged vet Barry Cooper to how he sees the future of vets in our industry. Surprisingly, cow and heifer trade across the country is holding up remarkably considering the challenging times being faced across the sector. Although farmers are
suffering and struggling at the moment, the numerous businesses and people who live off of farming will face some challenges in the months and years ahead. Farmers are making changes and cuts to their businesses and realising that they are managing as well without certain products and services. However, it is important that in order to protect their businesses for the future that cuts aren’t made which jeopardise fertility or herd health.
