In January four cows classified EX93 at Ernevale, including Ernevale Jasper Rosina EX93.
EX93 in one day; Ernevale Rampage Holiday, Ernevale Shottle Maryam, Ernevale Goldwyn Jesta and Ernevale Jasper Rosina. The same day, Ernevale Destry Triuna classified VG88 two year old and has a projected 305 day yield of 9948kgs.”
Seamus admits he always puts a cow out if he thinks she has the ability to gain an extra point, trying to improve the strength of pedigrees through classification. The Rosina family have had a strong influence at Ernevale, the result of four embryos purchased from Templedale Chief Mark Josephine. Three pregnancies resulted in three heifer calves named Ernevale Prelude A Rosina, Ernevale Prelude B Rosina and Ernevale Prelude C Rosina. There is no trace of A or B Rosina left in the herd, but 50% of the herd stems from C
Rosina. Although she was the lowest classified at VG89, she was the best breeding cow with four of her progeny classified Excellent.
“The best cow I ever bred was Ernevale MJ Rosina EX95-8E, a Belan Mingo Jubilant Red daughter. She is the highest classified cow ever bred at Ernevale. She won All-Ireland Dairy Champion three times at Fermanagh County Show. She was a pleasure to work with – she was flushed every year and went back in-calf first time, calving every 13 months and in her lifetime produced 92 tonnes of milk. John Gribbon told me her biggest downfall was being born in the same era as Medway Supreme Maude, MJ Rosina stood second at Balmoral eight times.” Over the years Seamus has held two production sales and is currently building up for another
one. In 2002 A Rosina sold as a dry cow carrying her seventh calf, she made 1500gns and went on to complete a further five lactations, classifying EX94 in her 11th lactation making her EX94-8E.
It was the Rosina family that stole the show at the 2013 sale when Ernevale Lavanguard Rosina sold for a top price of 2500gns to Tommy and Mark Henry. They also purchased a maternal sister by Atlas that scored VG86 two year old and stood second heifer in milk at Ballymena 2014. Another sister by Atlas sold in the sale for 1980gns and also classified VG as a two year old. Also sold in the sale was Ernevale Stanleycup Rosina, a granddaughter of C Rosina out of a Goldwyn daughter. Although she sold in to a herd that doesn’t classify, the farmer does say she stands out in the
