Michael’s achievements in HYB are extensive and include winning the Littlestar Award in 2006, being a member of the winning stock judging team at the Weekend Rally in 2006 and 2008, champion showman at the All Breeds All Britain Calf Show 2009 and 2013, a member of the winning Field to Photo competition in 2006, 2008 and 2010, champion clipper at UK Dairy Expo in 2012, champion clipper at the European Show in Switzerland and a member of the winning pair in 2012 and national clipping winner at the South Eastern and Yorkshire Weekend Rallies in 2012 and 2013 respectively.


As well as success in HYB competitions Michael’s highlights in Young Farmers competitions range from winning the National Golf Competition twice, winning junior and senior Dairy Cattle Dressing, being awarded best speaker at National Speechmaking, with his proudest moment winning the best individual dairy stock judging and reason giving twice at the National finals at the


Royal Highland Show. Michael also gained experience and knowledge from time spent working at Regancrest and being part of the team looking after their prize-winning show team for Madison.


Commenting on his award he said: “I am delighted to win the President’s Medal, it is the most prestigious award there is to win in HYB and I’m honoured to receive it. It is the icing on the cake of my HYB career having won showmanship, clipping and the Littlestar Award. I’m also grateful to Semex UK for the opportunity to go to both the Holstein World Conference in Argentina and Toronto to the Royal Winter Fair. My next ambition is to breed a class winner at the All Breeds All Britain Calf Show.”


Runners up in the competition this year were Andrew Patton from Northern Ireland and Nicola Lockyer from Devon. Andrew, 24, has been farming at home with the Ards herd for three years after completing an honours degree in Agricultural


Technology at Queens University, Belfast. Andrew is very interested in breeding and more so genomics. As well as breeding Andrew also enjoys showing and has had some great success with the family’s cows. Away from the farm Andrew is heavily involved with his local Young Farmers Club and is now in his fourth year as Club Leader. He has represented his Club at National competitions and is currently assistant country secretary and secretary for Northern Ireland HYB having previously been PR officer for three years previously. Within HYB Andrew’s success includes first senior at National Reasoned stock judging in 2010 and a member of the winning team in 2011, 2012 and 2013 as well as other top fourth placings individually. In 2014 he showed the first place October/ November class and overall champion, she travelled over to the All Britain All Breeds Calf Show to finish second. In 2013 Andrew won the Cogent Futures Award.
