Mobile units continue to transform the healthcare estate

obile buildings from Vanguard Healthcare Solutions are being used to increase capacity for
endoscopy procedures and provide a minor injuries unit at two hospitals in Scotland.
The company has provided a minor injuries facility at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (RIE), and a mobile endoscopy suite at St John’s Hospital in Livingston.
Both commissioned by NHS Lothian, the RIE unit sits alongside the hospital’s A&E and allows it to divert non-urgent cases away from the busy emergency department. The project incorporates flexible infrastructure including both mobile and modular elements, created in conjunction with Young Medical. Simon Squirrell, regional manager at Vanguard Healthcare Solutions, said
using mobile units to improve the efficiency of hospital departments was becoming increasingly common, adding: “By consulting with the hospital on its needs in relation to the patient pathway, how many patients it expected to see in the unit, and on exactly what the clinical requirements for the unit would be, we were able to propose a bespoke solution.” The facility includes a reception and waiting area, treatment room, plaster room, eyewash room, six treatment bays, clean and dirty utility spaces, lavatories, and a changing room. It will be in place for at least two years and will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
It will be connected to the existing department via a purpose-built walkway. Vanguard has also provided NHS Lothian with a mobile endoscopy suite
to help increase capacity for examinations including gastric, bowel and chest procedures at St John’s Hospital.
The suite includes a range of facilities including a reception, waiting area, consulting room, admission and discharge area, procedure room, recovery ward, toilets and changing room, refreshment area, utility areas, clean processing room, one-way flow for scopes, pass-through endoscope washer/disinfector, dedicated decontamination area, and an ultraviolet light endoscope storage cabinet. The suite also has HEPA-filtered
environmental air which conforms to Grade C EUGMP standards.
