Contract awarded for Weston Park development

B

ES has been awarded a £1.75m design-and-build contract for a new pharmacy and aseptic suite for chemotherapy and clinical trials at Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield. The company will take on the role of principal designer and contractor for the project, which was commissioned by Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

It involves the stripout, redesign, and

refurbishment of an existing pharmacy facility on the sixth floor of the hospital. During an initial 14-week phase, the BES team will work with the client to develop a detailed design to improve the flow and spatial efficiency of the initial brief.

The company has already helped the trust to identify value engineering opportunities appropriate to the classification of each area, with modifications to the HVAC and finishes that will reduce build costs, operational costs, and the unit’s overall carbon footprint. Together with new offices and changing areas, the facility will contain four isolator suites designed to comply with EU GMP Grade C including one advanced therapy medicinal product (ATMP) unit. To enable the hospital to continue operating while the work is being carried out, it will be implemented in two phases with completion scheduled for May 2020.

he New Victoria Hospital in Kingston-upon-Thames has opened the doors to its

reception and outpatient suite. The borough’s mayor, Councillor Thay Thayalan; and David Marshall, chief executive of the hospital, greeted the first patients to the new facility at an official ceremony.

The new entrance and reception, designed by Murphy Philipps Architects and built by Collins Construction, lead into a modern, fit-for-purpose outpatient facility with increased capacity. This includes 12 consulting rooms,

a cardiac diagnostic room, and five treatment rooms equipped for colposcopy, audiology and phlebotomy services.

Marshall said “For the first time people can see the hospital from the road and, in addition to the entrance

and reception, we have gained a redeveloped outpatient department with more space.

“Our patients will continue to receive the quality of care we have always provided, but this will now be in a five- star environment. And our staff will be able to do their jobs in a more- comfortable environment in purpose- built facilities.”

He added: “The hospital has been

here for 60 years and my vision is to develop it for another 60 years.” The redevelopment completes the construction of The Victoria Foundation Wing, which opened in 2016. This houses four theatres, a 14-bed

day surgery unit, and a new CT scanner with cardiac diagnostic facility.

City location for sexual health service

A

Leicestershire sexual health clinic has undergone refurbishment, bringing important community services into the city centre. J Tomlinson recently completed the state-of-the-art revamp on behalf of Leicester City Council after being awarded a place on its Construction Framework. The five-and-a-half-month project

covered the full refurbishment and reconfiguration of a disused unit located on the first floor of the Haymarket Shopping Centre, which has become the new home of the council’s sexual health service. Works included the creation of consultation and procedure rooms, offices, and a waiting room, as well as staff facilities, including a changing

room and locker rooms.

Internal and external decoration, window installations, and fire-stopping works were also delivered. The design, by Stephen George + Partners, creates a modern and discreet space for clinic staff and visitors utilising curved seating, parquet-style flooring, and LED lighting, which will help people navigate their way around the facility.
