Lighting the way at Stirling Health and Care Village

• Brace of homes opens in Bedford

nnovative lighting solutions are helping to enhance the environment for residents and staff at the flagship new Stirling Health and Care Village. CP Electronics was appointed to supply lighting control systems for the development, a joint venture between Stirling Council, NHS Forth Valley, and the Scottish Ambulance Service. It delivers a wide range of health and social services including support for older people and those with dementia or palliative care needs. Imperative to the project, the lighting solutions had to be dementia friendly so the installation followed the guidance from the University of Stirling’s Dementia Services Development Centre, which states that uniformity of lighting levels is important as people with sight loss can find it difficult to adapt to changing light conditions. Furthermore, it says, people with dementia may misinterpret shadows. The bedroom corridors in the Bellfield Centre, one of the key new facilities on the site, were fitted with CP’s RAPID system. The system offers a centrally-


controlled scene-setting solution that allows staff to manually control light levels in corridors. At nighttime, staff are able to dim the lights to 50% of their full output. However, all lights within the corridor can be switched to full power at the push of a button if an emergency occurs. In the public corridors, energy saving was also a key consideration. The RAPID system within these areas made use of 81 Passive Infrared Sensors (PIRs) and central heads which dictate lighting to dim to 50% if there is no movement after 15 minutes. If there is no activity for a further 15 minutes, the lux level is lowered further to 25% of its full capability.

But, once activity within the PIR’s 7m meter diameter zone is detected, the lights return to full power. Non-dimmable PIRs were used in toilets and storerooms to further minimise energy wastage. And the Bellfield Centre’s 116


bedrooms and en-suites are controlled by CP’s 7-channel lighting control system, Vitesse Plus. The system’s built-in pre-set menu allows the installer to configure the system quickly and intuitively. Each bedroom and en-suite is also fitted with absence detection sensors, but at the hospital’s request patients retain control of their own lighting preferences through switches at the door and bedhead.

to reduce energy wasted on lights that have been left on accidentally. For the facility’s consulting rooms, CP advised use of the Vitesse Modular system which maximises natural daylight during the consulting process while reducing energy wastage. Combining over 50 dimmable PIRs and a number of switches, the system is able to detect the amount of natural daylight entering the room and automatically adjust the lux levels emitted at the bank of lights nearest the window.

Two new care homes have been completed in Bedfordshire. Contractor, Stepnell; care home provider, Baycroft – part of One Housing; and developer, Frontier, have finished work on the cutting- edge facilities in Hitchin Road, Fairfield; and Ampthill Road in Flitwick. Designed by architects Harris Irwin Associates; the care homes each have 75 en-suite bedrooms plus extensive communal facilities including a cinema room, gym, café, hair and beauty salon, with guest accommodation and a children’s play area.

• Surrey care home unveiled


Banstead Manor Care Home has officially opened in Banstead, Surrey. The 77-bed facility is the latest addition to the Hallmark Care Homes’ portfolio. Designed by Lucas Design & Construction and built by Lawrence Baker, the home is dementia friendly and includes a café, therapy room, celebration room, a cinema room and restaurant-style dining rooms, as well as a choice of lounges, all set in landscaped gardens.
