Healthcare estate under the spotlight
The ongoing lack of capital continues to dominate discussions on the healthcare estate and the management of medical buildings.
Delegates at the annual healthcare buildings forum, held last month in Northampton (p34), heard from a series of eminent speakers that the market was looking for a new funding model following the death of PFI.

And, with £220m shifted from the NHS capital budget to the operating budget this year; any small amount of capital there was for new buildings, or to help with backlog maintenance in existing buildings, has all but disappeared. But, delegates at the event heard, the emergence of new models will underpin the next generation of healthcare buildings. You can read about the forum, and the first- ever healthcare buildings forum Scotland, on pages 30-34.
Scotland, in particular, is seeing major investment in medical infrastructure, and a new joined-up approach between health and social care; and our review provides an oversight of the opportunities North of the border.

Also in this edition, there are features on the offsite construction market (p36), in particular how repair can help the industry; infection control, including the impact of air filters and floor cleaning regimes on the spread of potentially-harmful bugs (p43); and, in the furniture section, we look at how modern products are enabling staff to do their jobs more effectively (p50).
In our projects section (p13) there is a special report on the design of the new Papworth Hospital, which opened earlier this year.
We speak to the designers of the project about how it is not only modernising the environment for staff, patients, and visitors; but is also setting a new standard for healthcare design worldwide.
And there is an overview of the care sector (p23), with features including the increased use of resin flooring to reduce falls.
In the next edition, we will be focusing on the Government’s recent announcement that the NHS will now need to cut carbon emissions to zero by 2050 and how this can be done.
