RECORD ON THE ON CLIMATE CHANGE

What the Tories say “We have no choice but to tackle climate change and biodiversity loss, or risk not only losing untold wonders of the natural world, but plunging whole regions into desperate poverty,” Environment secretary Theresa Villiers

What they’ve done By ending renewable energy subsidies and introducing planning restrictions, the Tories have presided over a flatlining of the numbers of wind farms and solar panels being built.

What will Labour doUpgrade the energy system, invest in renewable energy and create 400,000 good, green jobs across the country.

ON THE NHS

What the Tories say “On the steps of Downing Street I announced 20 new hospital upgrades. We’re now following that up with 40 new hospitals we’re going to be doing across the country,” Prime minister Boris Johnson

What they’ve done Funding for just six new hospitals was made available following the announcement. The promise of 40 hospitals would only be delivered should the Tories win two more elections.

What will Labour do Increase NHS spending by rising income tax for the top five per cent of earners as well as increasing tax on private

medical insurance. 4 ORKS Au- 5 uniteWORKS Summer 5 uniteWORKS Winter 2019

We investigate what the Conservatives have said and done – and what Labour will do in government

ON A BETTER DEAL FOR WORKERS

What the Tories say “We are making hard improvements on worker rights through an increase in the National Living Wage,” Conservative Party chairman James Cleverly

What they’ve done Workers have lost a number of important rights under the Conservatives because of the trade union act and other legislation. Further rights are also at risk under a Tory-led Brexit, including the working time directive.

What will Labour doRepeal the trade union act, roll out sectoral level collective bargaining and give the workforce of all the UK’s major businesses a right to elect a third of their firm’s board seats.

ON OUR COMMUNITIES

What the Tories say “Universal Credit provides a safeguard for the most vulnerable in our society. It supports strivers,” Work and pensions secretary Thérèse Coffey

What they’ve done Countless families have been left in poverty after waiting at least five weeks for Universal Credit payments to go through. A Trussell Trust survey of 1,100 people using over 40 food banks found that most of the participants were on Universal Credit.

What will Labour doReplace Universal Credit, halve food bank usage within a year and immediately end the worst aspects of the Tories’ punitive benefits sanction regime.

ON OUR KIDS’ FUTURE

What the Tories say “Our continuing investment in education, coupled with a bold reform agenda and the work of Ofsted will supercharge the ongoing rise in school standards,” Education secretary Gavin Williamson

What they’ve done Since 2011, more than £7bn has been slashed from the education budget leaving schools in crisis.

What will Labour do Set up a “National Education Service”, reverse Tory school cuts, put a price cap on school uniforms and replace Ofsted with a new system of measuring school performance.
