According to newly revealed NHS figures


• Tens of thousands of operations cancelled because of staff shortages and faulty medical equipment


• Of the 79,000 cancelled last year, 20 per cent were scrapped because of staffing issues and equipment failures


• Number of procedures called off by hospitals for non-clinical reasons increased by 32 per cent in last two years


• Almost 4,000 more were scrapped in 2018 than in 2016


• Nuffield Trust puts amount needed to repair faulty equipment across the service at £6bn


• In 2018 NHS reported it was 100,000 staff short


• Shortages include 10,000 doctors and 35,000 nurses


Pain and distress “That so many more people in pain and distress are forced to


endure cancelled operations, including increasingly on the day they were supposed to have treatment, is a shameful indictment of a decade of Tory cutbacks running our NHS into the ground.


“The simple truth is under the Tories, patients wait longer and longer for vital care,” Jonathan Ashworth, Labour’s health and social care spokesperson.
