Bulb Plants Wordsearch

This issue it’s the UNITE In a nut shell

Unite history

project ‘A history with a difference’ In October Unite signed a contract with Liverpool University

Press to publish its six-volume history celebrating 100 years since the formation of the T&G.

This is a history with a difference. It will be accessible, engaging in themes which resonate today – equalities, state power and the trade union movement’s relationship with the Labour Party. Reflecting on lessons learnt, it will be a living resource, feeding into union’s education programme.

It will be shaped by members. Over the past 12 months regional teams have already begun to coordinate their own research which will feed into UHP. This means team interviewing activists from the 60s and 70s, combing through archives and artefacts in regional officers and leafing through the local press.

Already, the editorial team has received accounts from Windsor Safari Park Dispute 1977-8, the Hanger Dispute 1986 and local case studies on the 1926 General Strike. Armed with recording equipment, members are capturing accounts and experiences which would otherwise be lost to the movement. The project is now full steam ahead.

The printed history will be complemented by a website www.theunitehistoryproject.org and a digital archive to be maintained as an on-going resource for the union. Look out for the first two volumes – taking us up to 1945 – going to print next Summer 2020.
