VOTE2019 Candidates When Labour win We asked four Unite members why they are standing for election

Lorna Robertson – NHS worker Ochil and South Perthshire

Time to shout

“Ochil & South Perthshire is not a marginal, explains Lorna, “but I want to win this seat back for Scottish Labour as seats in Scotland are so important for delivering a UK Labour government led by Jeremy Corbyn and ending the near decade of austerity the Tories (with Lib Dems) have imposed on us all.

“The sitting MP in this constituency is a Scottish Conservative, another added incentive in winning.

“As a local NHS worker, Unite staff side rep and socialist I am used to speaking up but now I need to shout, shout through the constitutional noise about Labour’s transformative policies that everyone so desperately needs.

“The SNP are turning this general election in to a mandate for independence. Only a vote for Scottish Labour on December 12 will get Boris out of No 10 and let us bring about real change for everyone. We are shouting it loud – “when Labour wins, Scotland wins”.

Emily Owen – charity worker Aberconwy

End pain of austerity Emily, a 25-year old Unite Wales youth activist has got bagsful of hopes and ambitions for the people of Aberconwy, North Wales, if they elect her as their MP. Central to her plans is the need to reverse the effects of austerity cuts and to narrow the inequality gap.

“I want to give real working people a strong voice – I believe in real people deserving real MPs – not professional MP wannabes.

“I’m determined to see the end to the unnecessary cruelties of austerity” she says. “I want affordable housing that is truly affordable. Good, unionised, local jobs are vital to the future of Aberconwy and the UK in general. So many people work so hard in low paid, short term, insecure work – it’s not right. I’m fighting for proper, decent jobs by investing in local businesses.

“Labour’s green new deal will do exactly that and that’s why voters everywhere should vote Labour. But what would be the first thing I do if elected? From day one I would fight to end the need for food banks. We’re the fifth biggest economy and we’ve let our people go hungry – it’s a disgrace. Only Labour can end this unnecessary pain.”
