“If we don’t start making those investments (proposed by Labour) on the 12th or 13th of December, then our chances of tackling climate change will be lost. And we won’t be looking at a Green Industrial Revolution in 11 years’ time; we’ll be looking at mitigating the horrific consequences that are ahead of us.
“That won’t offer hope to our communities. We won’t be saying to our communities you can have a local wind farm, your energy bills are going to come down, we’ll insulate your home – we’ll be telling them to turn their electricity off. And it will be the poorest and most vulnerable who will be hit hardest by this. That’s how critical this election is.”
Unite national officer for energy Peter McIntosh called Labour’s plans “a ‘game changer’ in the debate about how we de- carbonise energy in a way that boosts jobs and the economy, while protecting our environment for future generations”.
“As the largest union representing energy workers, we very much welcome
the continued commitment by the Labour party to put workers at the heart of the transition to a green economy,” he said. “This radical plan will not only create 850,000 new skilled unionised jobs here in the UK, but also help end fuel poverty while boosting household incomes.”
Unite assistant general secretary Steve Turner echoed this view – as he emphasised that tackling climate change is above all a class issue. “We share our planet, breath our air and care about our future,” Turner said in a speech to Labour conference. “And we recognise that climate change demands a new economy, public ownership, environmental reparations including the free transfer of green technology to the developing world, and an integrated industrial strategy to underpin the social and industrial transformation necessary to secure a sustainable future for our planet.
“Above all, it demands an interventionist, socialist, Labour government and comrades it’s our role, our duty, to ensure that we deliver one.”
