It may seem ironic that the founder of a cloud-based file- sharing service has written a book about the insidiousness of the internet, but few people can be better qualified to highlight the absurdity of data misuse by business for monetary gain. In The Trust Manifesto, WeTransfer president Damien Bradfield makes a convincing argument for web users to demand transparency and
respect from the firms that should exist to serve them, not the other way round. He starts with the allegory of a shopper who is plagued by a retail assistant who keeps trying to sell him a pair of shoes long after he’s left the store. We wouldn’t settle for this in real life, so why have we accepted it with online adverts? Between tales of WeTransfer’s scrappy growth and tacit integrity – the service
requires no sign-ups, for instance – are conversations with figures such as
Baroness Lane-Fox and technophile Stephen Fry about trust online. Bradfield also sets out his vision for a more democratic ecosystem, urging business leaders to resist pandering to the stock market and instead take the long view. It’s a read packed with valuable perspectives for businesses and consumers alike.
The Trust Manifesto: What you need to do to create a better internet, by Damien Bradfield, is
