PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT O

ne of the IoD’s four responsibilities, as enshrined in its royal charter, is to “promote for the public benefi t high levels of skill, knowledge, professional competence and integrity on the part of directors”. We constantly adapt how we do this in line with the ever-changing challenges that business leaders face. Our latest CPD offering – the Professional Director Series – is designed to cater to directors at all levels like never before. Whether you’re a highly experienced Chartered Director or you’ve just been appointed to your fi rst board role, these learning events offer a convenient way to keep your skills up to date, wherever you are and whatever your schedule.

FLEXIBLE WORKSHOPS

Events in the Professional Director Series are being held across England and Wales (see below for details of CPD events in Scotland). They offer half-day or full-day programmes comprising two or four 90-minute workshops respectively. Morning sessions run from 9.30am to 12.30pm and afternoon sessions run from 1pm to 4.30pm. Delegates can select those that best suit their requirements. It costs £249 (plus VAT) for a member to attend a full day or £140 (plus VAT) to attend half a day. All of the topics covered are based on the IoD director competency framework. Take the IoD North West Professional Director Series in Manchester on 25 October, for instance. Its morning session consists of workshops on

by the participants, as long as the identity of those disclosing it is protected.

Pousson says that the workshops are “informal and risk-free. All attendees are encouraged to share their own experiences and get to grips with real-world case studies. The variety of experience, both professional and personal, in the room is another enriching factor.” By joining the Professional Director Series, you will also gain access to exclusive resources from the IoD’s Digital Academy platform.

strategic decision-making and improving board dynamics, while the two afternoon workshops offer guidance for delegates stepping up to a board position for the fi rst time and advice for business leaders seeking their fi rst non-executive roles. The IoD East Midlands Professional Director Series, meanwhile, is offering half-day sessions on the mornings of 12, 13 and 28 November. One of the workshops promises to reveal the “top fi ve things every director must know”.

INDUSTRY-LEADING TUITION As with the IoD’s full range of professional development offerings, this series is run by course leaders who have several years of practical industry know-how under their belts.

Jean Pousson is an IoD course leader who has worked with organisations including Acas, Fujitsu Siemens, the Ministry of Defence and Lloyds Banking Group. He says: “Our tutors work with between 600 and 700 directors a year on average. Delegates are in the hands of experienced practitioners who have developed excellent lecturing and facilitation skills over a number of years.”

Every workshop is designed to put delegates at ease and encourage open discussion in a supportive environment. Chatham House rules apply, which means that any information revealed may be used

Because the IoD is constantly developing its curriculum and using the very latest case studies, you will undoubtedly learn something new each time you attend a workshop, according to Pousson. “These interventions have proved very helpful refreshers to complement seasoned directors’ professional development,” he says. “The content is designed to give you a quick insight into the topics of most interest to you. This may highlight your interest in a particular area and prompt you to consider one of the more intensive courses offered by the institute. Many attendees have done just that in the past.” Because there are spaces for only 20 delegates on each workshop, some have already sold out, so you’d be well advised to book your place early to avoid disappointment.

IOD SCOTLAND’S PROFESSIONAL DIRECTOR SERIES IoD Scotland members continue to have their choice of a range of half- and full-day Professional Director Series

workshops that provide foundational knowledge on which to base a formal qualifi cation – the certifi cate in company direction, for instance.

As with all institute events, the IoD Scotland Professional Director Series represents another excellent opportunity to meet fellow leaders working in a range of sectors, share experiences and discover new approaches to leadership.

Upcoming Professional Director Series workshops in Edinburgh include one on mastering the art of strategic questioning (21 November), which introduces a highly effective technique that borrows from investigative journalism, cognitive neuroscience and social psychology. Another, on 26 November, will cover the fundamental role of the non-executive director. The standard cost to IoD members of each full-day workshop is £345 (plus VAT), with an early- booking rate of £295 (plus VAT). A member can also bring a non-member as a guest at the above rates.
