YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS
JOIN THE ‘Z’ LIST S
As ‘junior Davos’ comes to the UK, it’s time to take inspiration from some of the world’s most talented gen-Z business leaders
easoned business leaders who like to stay fresh by keeping up with
what the latest generation of entrepreneurs are doing should check out the work of Alexandr Wang. The 22-year-old has founded Silicon Valley’s latest unicorn (a private venture valued at more than $1 billion). Wang’s business, Scale AI, uses artificial intelligence in image recognition and audio transcription. Companies usually hire people to label pictures; Scale AI’s software can do this automatically. Meanwhile, 18-year-old Harvard student Trisha Prabhu has developed ReThink. This enormously successful app, designed to combat cyber- bullying, is used by more than 2.5 million people worldwide. She has even given a TED talk on the subject.
Then there’s the
Ambassadors Company, founded and led by
19-year-old Maxine Marcus. The market research consultancy, which enlists the help of teenagers to test its clients’ new offerings, is another hot property in Silicon Valley. Yet all these dynamic young entrepreneurs look like wizened C-suite sages compared with Shakira Rahman. The 11-year-old is the “mini-CEO” of Penny Appeal, an anti-poverty charity based in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, that raised £24.5 million in 2017-18. In her first board meeting, she taught her colleagues how to make slime. Having grown up alongside – and learnt using – digital technology, post-millennials are poised to become the most entrepreneurial
generation yet. Anyone looking to feed off the energy of these teen tycoons would be wise to keep an eye on this year’s One Young World summit – aka “junior Davos” – when it comes to London in October.
