Chris Maxwell’s article on sustainability (“No sustain, no gain”, June/July) provides valuable insights, but there’s a further issue that’s worthy of consideration: metrics. Numerous commentators have identified the potential benefits of implementing a sustainable strategy: by appealing to employees it aids retention; by appealing to consumers it aids marketing and sales; by reducing waste it cuts costs; and by focusing on risk mitigation it enhances business continuity. But directors will always ask the question: “By how much?” Given that most sustainability measures will incur costs, we need figures to calculate the ratio of cost to benefit.
